Chapter Fifteen
SAVANNAH
Mom called to tell me that Miles was sick. She didnât want to have me drive over in the middle of the night, but I felt horribly guilty for not being there.
As soon as I got off the phone, I changed out of my business attire into leggings and a sweatshirt. I stopped at the pharmacy on Main Street to grab some over-the-counter pain meds, saltines, and popsicles before heading to my parentsâ house.
When I arrived, Miles lay on the couch next to Mom. I rested the back of my hand on his forehead. He was warm, his skin pale. He looked awful.
Dad was drinking his coffee in the kitchen. âPoor guyâs miserable.â
The TV was on, but he wasnât even watching it. I kneeled on the floor in front of him.
âHe has a slight fever. I think itâs just a stomach virus,â Mom said.
âA quick one, I hope. Right, buddy?â I asked him.
He nodded miserably. âWhere were you last night?â
âRemember, you wanted a sleepover at Grandma and Grandpaâs.â
âBut Iâm sick.â His voice was pitiful.
âI didnât know.â Or I never would have left you.
Mom leaned over to pat his knee. âThatâs my fault. I didnât want to make your mom drive over in the middle of the night.â
âI would have come if Iâd known.â Iâd never not go to him if he needed me.
âThereâs no sense in moving him when he feels so bad. Stay here for another night. Hopefully, heâll feel better tomorrow.â
I sat at the end of the couch, pulling out my phone. âI have to let the school know he wonât be in today.â
I emailed the attendance lady, then my finger hovered over the contacts. Should I tell Ethan? Would he care? I didnât even know how to characterize last night. It wasnât a date. We shared a meal, then he walked me home. Something possessed me to invite him in, and we both knew what was going to happen once he did.
We both wanted it, but did it mean something more?
Heâd said he wanted to date me, but that was before weâd slept together. It should have felt wild and reckless, but instead, I felt cherished. Ethan touched me like I was made of glass, someone to worship. My favorite memory was the shower. How weâd pleasured each other in ways that felt more intimate than actual sex, then heâd washed my body and hair. It was amazing.
âI donât feel so good.â Miles covered his hand with his mouth.
It was the dose of reality I needed. I jumped up, grabbing the bucket to place in front of him, brushing his hair back to soothe him. Miles was my priority, not sleeping with Ethan.
When he finished dry heaving, I got him in the bath.
Mom stood in the doorway. âYour father and Iâll work the store today. Donât worry about a thing.â
I sighed, closing my eyes. âI completely forgot about the store.â
That was the thing about being a business owner, it didnât matter if you had a sick child, customers expected you to be open.
